RESEARCH ON THE HISTORY OF METEORITICS AND
PLANETARY SCIENCE Edward Howard (center) as he
appears in an engraving at the Royal Institution. On either side of Howard
are geologist William Smith (left) and chemist Willian Allen. The engraving
is a copy of a profile in bronze probably made posthumously. Howard performed
the first modern analysis on meteorites and concluded that because of their
similarity, regardless of where they fell on Earth, that they were
extraterrestrial. In recognition of his importance to meteorite research, the
howardite meteorite class is named after him. |
